In a county where the top employment industry is education, led by the University of California, Santa Cruz, one would think the elementary and secondary schools would be exceptional. Let's find out.

Hmm? Frankly, after just having a baby, the quality of the educational system is very important to me and my wife and, I must admit to a great deal of disappointment.

After wrestling with the state's assessment, which does NOT rank the counties or schools, I went searching on the Internet. The result was the Associated Press' computer-assisted analysis of the state's Academic Performance Index scores. The report is for 1999, but I think it is still valid. Can't imagine schools changing that quickly. They ranked all schools and then separated them out by county.

The top school in Santa Cruz County is Happy Valley Elementary with a state rank of 97. The next highest is Bonny Doon Elementary with a state rank of 478.

AP then broke the schools into High, Middle and Elementary and broke them down into deciles.

The top high school is San Lorenzo with a ranking of 123. Harbor High is next at 150.

The top middle school is Scotts Valley Middle with a score of 43. Aptos Junior High comes next at 163.

For elementary schools, the top ranked Santa Cruz school is Happy Valley at 74. The second is Brook Knoll at 145.
